As an antifungal medication, posaconazole functions by blocking the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which is essential for the production of ergosterol, a major constituent of the fungal cell membrane. Posaconazole damages the integrity of the cell membrane by preventing the synthesis of ergosterol, which results in cell death and stops the growth of fungi.
