Mechanism of Action:

Tegafur is metabolized into 5-FU in the body, which inhibits thymidylate synthase, an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis in cancer cells, leading to cell death. Gimeracil enhances the anticancer effects of 5-FU by preventing its rapid degradation, allowing for prolonged exposure of cancer cells to the active drug. Oteracil protects normal tissues, especially the gastrointestinal tract, from the toxic effects of 5-FU, minimizing side effects like severe diarrhea and mucositis.
