Gardasil 9 is a recombinant injection designed to protect against infections caused by 9 types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It is used to avoid genital warts and disorders like cervical, vaginal, vulvar, and anal malignancies that are linked to HPV.

Before getting the Gardasil vaccine, let your doctor know if you are immunocompromised, pregnant, or allergic to any of the ingredients. Regular check-ups and safe practices are crucial because it does not cure pre-existing HPV infections or provide protection against all forms of HPV.

Brand Name: Gardasil

Composition: Human Papillomavirus 9-Valent

Mechanism of Action:

Gardasil 9 is a recombinant HPV vaccine containing L1 Virus-Like Particles (VLPs) for HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Following an intramuscular injection, antigen-presenting cells (APCs) digest the VLPs and trigger T-helper cells, which in turn trigger B cells to generate neutralizing antibodies specific to HPV. These antibodies inhibit the virus's ability to replicate by preventing HPV from invading host epithelial cells. Long-term immunological memory is induced by the vaccine, providing sustained protection against genital warts and malignancies linked to HPV. For more robust and long-lasting protection, aluminum adjuvant strengthens the immune response.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the Gardasil 9 Vaccine?
Gardasil 9 is a 9-valent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine designed to help protect against 9 strains of HPV (types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58). These strains are associated with a significant proportion of HPV-related cancers and genital warts, though the degree of protection may vary.

2. Who may benefit from Gardasil 9?
Gardasil 9 may be recommended for:
•         Girls and boys aged 9–14 years (2-dose schedule)
•         Adolescents and young adults aged 15–26 years (3-dose schedule)
•         Adults aged 27–45 may potentially benefit based on individual risk assessment and physician recommendation
Your doctor will assess whether vaccination is appropriate for you.

3. What conditions may Gardasil 9 help protect against?
Gardasil 9 is designed to help provide protection against:
•         Cervical cancer (caused by HPV strains in the vaccine)
•         Vulvar and vaginal cancers
•         Anal cancer
•         Certain HPV-related head and neck cancers
•         Genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11
It does not protect against HPV strains not included in the vaccine.

4. How many doses of Gardasil 9 are typically needed?
•         2-dose schedule: For individuals who begin the series before the age of 15 (second dose given 6–12 months after the first)
•         3-dose schedule: For those aged 15–26, or immunocompromised individuals (given at 0, 2, and 6 months)
Your doctor will confirm the appropriate schedule for you.

5. How is Gardasil 9 administered?
Gardasil 9 is given as an intramuscular injection, typically in the upper arm (deltoid) or upper thigh, by a trained healthcare professional.

6. What are the possible side effects of Gardasil 9?
Some individuals may experience:
•         Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
•         Headache
•         Mild fever
•         Dizziness or brief fainting immediately after injection
These are generally mild and temporary. Sitting or lying down for 15 minutes post-vaccination may help reduce the risk of dizziness or fainting.

7. Is Gardasil 9 effective if an HPV infection is already present?
Gardasil 9 is not intended to treat existing HPV infections. Its protective potential is greatest when administered before any HPV exposure. However, even if some HPV exposure has occurred, the vaccine may still offer protection against strains the individual has not yet encountered. Consult your doctor for personalised advice.

8. Does receiving Gardasil 9 eliminate the need for cervical cancer screening?
No. Even after vaccination, regular cervical cancer screening (such as Pap smear or HPV testing) remains important, as the vaccine does not cover all HPV strains. Screening recommendations should be followed as per your doctor's advice.

9. How safe is Gardasil 9?
Gardasil 9 has undergone extensive clinical evaluation and is approved by major regulatory authorities worldwide. It has a well-documented safety profile based on large-scale clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance. As with any vaccine, individual reactions may vary.

10. Is Gardasil 9 available in India?
Gardasil 9 is available in India. Please consult your doctor for information on the current recommended vaccination schedule, eligibility, and access at certified vaccination centres.
