Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is Eltromag 50mg Tablet?
Eltromag 50mg contains Eltrombopag, a thrombopoietin receptor agonist. It may be prescribed for the management of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) – a condition associated with low platelet counts – and for severe aplastic anaemia in certain patients. Individual suitability must be assessed by a haematologist.
2. How does Eltrombopag work?
Eltrombopag is believed to stimulate thrombopoietin receptors on bone marrow stem cells, which may promote the production and maturation of platelets. This may help increase platelet counts in some patients, though responses can vary considerably.
3. What conditions may Eltromag be prescribed for?
Eltromag may be considered for:
• Chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adults and children aged 1 year and older
• Severe aplastic anaemia (in combination with immunosuppressive therapy, in some patients)
• Thrombocytopenia in certain patients with chronic hepatitis C undergoing interferon-based therapy
Eligibility is determined by your haematologist after a thorough clinical evaluation.
4. How is Eltromag 50mg taken?
It is taken orally once daily, generally on an empty stomach or at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after food, antacids, or dairy products, to allow adequate absorption. Follow your doctor's instructions on the timing carefully.
5. What is the usual dose of Eltromag?
The starting dose is typically 25–50mg once daily, adjusted based on platelet response and tolerability. The maximum dose is generally 75mg per day, though your doctor may prescribe differently based on your clinical picture.
6. What are the possible side effects of Eltromag?
Some patients may experience:
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Headache
• Elevated liver enzymes (hepatotoxicity – which may require monitoring)
• Cataract formation with long-term use
• Anaemia
Not all patients will experience these effects. Inform your doctor if you notice any new or worsening symptoms.
7. Are there serious risks associated with Eltromag?
Some patients may be at risk of more serious adverse events, including:
• Hepatotoxicity (liver injury) – liver function must be regularly monitored
• Thrombotic or thromboembolic events (blood clot formation) in some patients
• Bone marrow fibrosis with prolonged use in some cases
Your doctor will monitor for these risks during treatment.
8. Are there any dietary restrictions while taking Eltromag?
Yes. Certain foods and supplements – including dairy products, calcium-rich foods, antacids, and mineral supplements – may significantly reduce the absorption of Eltrombopag if consumed within 4 hours of taking the tablet. Please follow your doctor's or pharmacist's guidance on timing.
9. How often should liver function be monitored?
Liver function tests (LFTs) are generally recommended before starting treatment, every 2 weeks during dose adjustments, and monthly once the dose is stable. Your doctor will advise on the specific monitoring schedule for your situation.
10. Is Eltromag 50mg a prescription-only medicine?
Yes. Eltromag is a prescription-only medicine used under the supervision of a haematologist or specialist physician.
