Mechanism of Action:

Viral RNA synthesis and replication are inhibited by ribavirin, a nucleoside analog (guanosine analog), by a variety of methods. It causes error catastrophe by raising the rate of mutation in the viral genome and depleting the GTP pool by blocking inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH). It also improves the host immune response through immunomodulatory actions. Since ribavirin is ineffective when taken alone, it is usually combined with pegylated interferon alfa or direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for the best possible therapeutic outcome.
